EMT / Paramedic

Emergency, pre-hospital care — one of the fastest ways to real hands-on experience.

What to focus on right now

Freshman year: explore wide

Join (or start) a health-related club like HOSA or a Red Cross chapter.
Volunteer somewhere local — it doesn't need to be medical yet, just consistent.
Keep your foundation strong in biology and chemistry; it pays off later.
Enter a MedMindset poster contest — an easy first "real" project for your list.

Sophomore year: get certified, get closer

Get CPR/First Aid certified — cheap, fast, and genuinely useful.
Start reaching out for shadowing hours, even just a few.
Look into summer programs that accept sophomores.
Take on a leadership role in a club you already joined.

Junior year: go deeper

Apply to summer research or immersion programs.
Push into AP Bio/Chem if you haven't already.
Start turning your experiences into a real portfolio.
Begin standardized test prep if your path needs it.

Senior year: bring it together

Turn your strongest experiences into application essay material.
Keep leadership roles active — don't let them quietly end in the fall.
Consider a capstone or independent project (like this one!).
Look into college-level health programs that offer credit.

College: build the real record

Declare or lean into a pre-health track early.
Get a clinical certification (CNA, EMT, scribe).
Join a lab or research project; even a small role counts.
